The Maker
Kanika studied fashion design in Chandigarh, India in 2014 and moved to Mumbai. After experiencing costume design with Bollywood for two years and working in big films like Dangal, Raabta, Illegal, she moved back to Delhi to stay close to her family.
A friend in Delhi introduced her to the world of Handmade functional ceramics. She got amazed with the versatility of clay. She finds pottery meditative and therapeutic.
She started her training in pottery in 2016 with Delhi Blue Pottery and found her lifework. In 2018, she founded AtKanikas.
As a child, she was always interested in learning crafts. She would not miss any summer class related to art & craft. Her mother always taught her the beauty in art, from making her dresses to the wall frames her mother made for their home. Kanika always appreciated the effort and artistry in hand made things.
Kanika now spends her days in Bangalore, Karnataka creating pottery and showcasing her work at events. She also teaches pottery in her free time for joy.
The Making
For making pottery, the following steps are followed :
1. Sourcing clay
2. Preparing clay, wedging
3. Center clay on wheel
4. Create form
5. Place on ware board to dry (leather hard)
6. Trim and finish pieces when leather hard
7. Add signature and store to dry (bone dry)
8. Bisque fire
9. Sanding
10. Glazing
11. Glaze firing upto 1240°
